Week Five: Mid-Term

black and white photo of plastic ghost decorationAll,

Short posting this week, mostly just FYIs.

First, keep working on your comic book projects (use Journals #1, #2, and now especially the Journal #4 checklist to keep yourself on track: https://blogs.uoregon.edu/myvisualstory/files/2021/10/My-Visual-Story-Creative-Journal-Four-Fall-2021.pdf).

Also be ready to work with Giovanna on your Two-Year (academic) planning in a couple of weeks.

We hope to get some Art Ducko comic book workshop time this coming Monday, but if they are unable to come in we will still focus on comic book work time.

And lastly, remember to meet with Robert for your 1:1 meetings during the time you signed up these next couple of weeks.  The times are all on Robert’s calendar.  Robert’s office is in PLC 58 (Prince Lucien Campbell Hall), which is located on the lower level of the building (if you are seeing the English office you are one floor above where Robert is at), and in the corner behind the Canvas Support Services office.  Email Robert if you need more directions!

If you have any questions, let us know!

Best,

Robert and Giovanna

And Happy Halloween!

Week Four (Five): Moving into the Midterm, Time for Reflection, and More Comic Work

Free Boba Fett imageAll,

Hi, realize this is a later in the week posting so my apologies.   Please do pay attention to some important items highlighted in bold below.

We hope everyone enjoyed our Bobahead and Museum of Art time Monday!

As we move from this week (Week 4) into the next week (5) we will take a little time to revisit your Student Inventories and reflect on how things are going towards your goals, and of course really continue to focus on working on your comics.

For Monday’s class (Oct. 25th) please bring in your Student Inventory that you filled out in our first class.

We will also plan to send your ‘Achievement’ updates next week, so be on the look out for these in your uoregon email accounts.

AND continue to work on your comics, these next few weeks are going to be really really busy with your other classes and the various midterms you will be studying for and taking.  It will be hard to focus on your comics because they will not be a top priority, but keep on top of your work as much as you can.  Again, this term is going to go fast and it will be time to turn those in before you know it!

Best,

Robert and Giovanna

Week Three: Visualization, Creativity, and the Artistic Voice

Gender Isn’t Binary, and Neither is Anatomy by Archie Bongiovanni and Sarah Mirk Posted on September 16, 2019 https://thenib.com/gender-isn-t-binary-and-neither-is-anatomy/

All,

Another excellent class this Monday!  Greatly enjoyed our discussions about comic book techniques (panel size, gutters, passing of time, color!), the artist mediums of choice, the creative and artistic voice (historical context, viewer interpretation of themes, abstract expressions!), and especially awesome were all your visualizations of the concepts being discussed!

Again, as you move through your work as an academic here at the UO, and beyond into all of your creative and work endeavors, continue to think about different ways to visualize your ideas.  Think about ways to use visualizations to help you write papers and reports, draft out workflows, and help you through all kinds of moments where you need to think about creative, intellectual, and work challenges.  In many ways this is what this FIG is all about!  And as we talked about in class ways in which to build your visual critical thinking skills and your creative processing skills.

And now some ‘business’ items for this next week:

  1. Remember to meet with Giovanna for your 1:1s.
  2. There is a comic making workshop with visiting artist Sarah Mirk this Friday (October 15th) from 5:00-6:30pm (in 191 Anstett Hall).  We know we were trying to get this scheduled at a better time, but looks like Professor Kelp-Stebbins was only able to schedule the workshop at this later time to make it work for the artist’s schedule.  Going to this event will count towards an Academic Event and your “Socialization” achievement.
  3. Keep an eye out for information about the next Social Event that Giovanna will be organizing.
  4. Keep working on your comic books!  Use your two Creative Journals as your guides.
  5. Front doors at Museum of Art UOIMPORTANT:  We will be visiting the UO Museum of Art next Monday (Oct. 18th).  We will be meeting at the front (see the photo to the right), and it is important to be there no later than 3:05 (we will NOT meet at the classroom, go straight to the Museum).   Here are the visitor guidelines (please review before we meet at the Museum): https://blogs.uoregon.edu/myvisualstory/files/2021/10/2021-JSMA-Visitor-Guidelines.pdf

And looking even more forward this term:

  1. Robert will schedule 1:1s with everyone later in Week 5.
  2. IMPORTANT: Your comic projects will be due Week 8.  If you are providing an electronic version of your comic book (PDF is our preference, but ask about other formats) then it is due before midnight Friday, November 19th.  If you are going to turn in a physical copy for us to make photocopies of we need that copy before noon Friday, November 19th, the last moment to get them to us will be when Giovanna is at the EMU Fishbowl from 11:00am to noon.

Okay, lots of information above!  As always let us know if you have questions.

Best,

Robert and Giovanna

Week Two: UO Libraries and More Comic Book Work

movie poster for Raya and the Last DragonHi,

As a follow up to this Monday’s class please find various resources below (all below links will open in a new tab or window).

First, as follow up to Giovanna’s presentation about the UO Libraries here are some links:

Next, remember that our first social event is this Thursday and we will be going to the Ducks After Dark movie showing of Raya and the Last Dragon, see more information here: https://www.instagram.com/ducksafterdark/. Be there at 7:00pm, doors open at 7:15pm.

Some information about Art Ducko and the UO Comics and Cartoon Studies Minor:

Art Ducko = Not finding a ton of current information, but see if you can contact them through their email on this page: https://uoregon.campuslabs.com/engage/organization/art-ducko and here is their main blog site (this does not look to have been updated for a little while): https://artduckomagazine.wordpress.com/

UO Comics and Cartoon Studies Minor: https://comics.uoregon.edu/ and most current course listings: https://english.uoregon.edu/term-course-offerings?offering_term=All&fulfillment%5B%5D=48

And as promised a preview of next Monday, October 11th, and we will spending the first half of class doing some discussion activities.  Again, we are not grading these activities but we want to help you all feel more comfortable practicing academic focused discussions, and of course we want to hear from you about what you have learned in the first couple of weeks in your ART 101 and ENG 280 classes!  Be ready to discuss the following:

  1. What is one topic from both classes you are already applying to your comic book work?
  2. What do both the classes have to say about the artistic creative voice?  As in how do artists and writers bring out thematic topics (political, social, cultural, and personal) in their work?
  3. In what ways do you see personal connections to the artists and writers you are learning about?  How do you personally relate to the artists and writers, and their creative approaches to storytelling?

And last but not least!  For those of you wanting to jump to the next stage(s) of your comic book process here is the second Creative Journal: https://blogs.uoregon.edu/myvisualstory/files/2021/10/My-Visual-Story-Creative-Journal-Two.pdf

As always please contact either one of us with questions, stuff you want to share with the class, and your thoughts!

Best,

Robert and Giovanna
