Avery Clarke: Fall 2020 Comic Book Showcase

Introduction

My comic is about a society in the future where everyone must wear glasses that shield them from seeing the effects of climate change. The characters usually cannot see anything without their glasses, but Jenna, the main character, wakes up one morning to find that’s not the case for her anymore. The story is her discovering what the world really looks like without the glasses that usually filter her vision. I hope that this story can represent how harmful it can be to ignore pressing issues such as climate change. I tried to represent some of these issues artistically throughout the comic, and I found that both the ENG 280 and ART 101 classes influenced the decisions I made. The comics we studied in ENG 280, particularly Sabrina, helped me realize how little details, such as facial expressions or what’s in the background, can really shape the narrative of a comic. I also found inspiration from the Art 101 class because of Colin Ives’ lecture that mentions that the goal of art (or comics in this situation) isn’t to necessarily solve the issue it presents, but rather to start a conversation about it. This is why I felt there couldn’t be a proper conclusion to the story because it is still an issue we must work out as a society.

  1. Avery, I loved your comic and appreciated your candid video walk-through of it. I was especially impressed by the panel that shows the closeup of the glasses framing the forest landscape – it’s beautifully rendered! Keep up your strong creative work and your passion for environmental justice.
