Visual Poem: Beautiful Lives Lost Portrait Project

At a loss for what to do after hearing about the mass shooting in Las Vegas, artist Quin Sweetman turned to her art and her artist community to find a way to honor the lives of those who were lost. Together they started the Beautiful Lives Lost Portrait Project.

Quin and other artists who are a part of this project have created a portrait painting of the individual they chose to honor in their painting. The paintings are composites of several images that each artist found online of the person they are remembering through their painting.

Quin chose to paint Charleston Hartfield. He was a husband, father, an off-duty Las Vegas police officer and youth football coach in his community.

Visual Poem: Wild Child

My colleague’s granddaughter is a biologist in the making. I followed her around on a typical, rainy day of backyard exploration.

Visual Poem: Back Office Habitat

I documented while my colleagues worked during a morning of backyard restoration at my office last week. Not a bad way to spend a chilly fall morning.

Visual Poem: School Commute

A little slice of my school commute on the MAX and by foot from Clackamas Town Center to the White Stag building.

Visual Poem: The Art of Service

With the windows open and the sound of the rain, Chad and I sat down in his studio to talk about how art has saved his life and how it has connected him to the community. This visual poem is a short reflection of his journey. The rain provides a soothing comfort for Chad.

Chad used his art to learn how to cope with his PTSD and he uses his art to hep his community and for raising awareness to PTSD and addictions. This 60 second visual poem reflects part of his personal story, working through his PTSD through the use of his art and his service to his community.
