The Fabulous Lipitones: Timing and Reveal

I wanted to watch and discuss some work that is resembles more of the look of what we are producing for the purposes of class. Blue Chalk’s portfolio pieces on their website pointed towards lots of great little multimedia shorts. I am trying work on the ability to raise a question — using editing techniques and the ability to seek those moments out — then answering it. I’ve also heard this called the “reveal,” and as we have learned, the most important part of the reveal is timing.

I watched “The Fabulous Lipitones” short from Blue Chalk specifically for the use of timing/ reveals. The piece talks about comedy, and much like what we are learning in class, some of the most important elements of comedy are also timing. The punchline. The reveal.

This is often done in editing through raising that unanswered question, then answering it at the right moment or with the right shot. There are two points in this short where I feel the editing embodies that technique very well.

At the start of the piece, we hear the singing of a barbershop quartet. The b-roll is of empty chairs where the audience would sit, detailed shots of the quartet’s shoes, hats, and costumes, and perhaps the most tell-tail sign is the barber shop poll at 0:13. The unanswered question here is: “Where are we at and why?” The b-roll then cuts away to the outside of a theatre at 0:20. By the clues of the various shots inside of the theatre, and the eventual reveal of the outside of the theatre, we establish what this piece will be about. Another detail to notice is that all the elements of the theatre are shown, yet there are no people inside of it. No one is on stage, and the audience is empty. Perhaps this is a raised question as well: “Will there be a play here?”

Another examples of the unanswered question being revealed is at 4:35. But this is an interesting one, and I am curious to see what we can make of it. At 4:35 we hear sounds of wind. Pages from a script are blowing in the breeze. We are outside. This scene is abruptly brought inside by the turn of a page, and our subject is writing and editing the script from his living room. What was the significance of the wind noise? Perhaps it was the editors creative way to transition from the previous scene, or perhaps it was an opportunity to let the piece breathe from soundbites. Though I am unclear about why that edit was made, why there was wind noise only to be brought indoors, it still has elements of a reveal. We are looking at a script laying on a table. At this point I am asking myself: “Will the play go on?”  There is no sound (except the curious ambience of the wind), and then at 4:42, the answer is revealed that this is the script our script-writing character is editing to get it ready for the show.

Finally, the ending scene at 6:16,  the theatre is full with the play happening on stage. The audience’s seats are filled, and the costumes we saw on hangers at the beginning are now being worn by the actors. This parallel narrative that is happening through b-roll under the actual storyline of the piece really complements and drives us to the conclusion. Great use of reveals and timing by the editors of this piece.
