Brogan’s Dream: Matched-Action Sequences

One of my most self-diagnosed shortcomings from last term was my lack of finesse in creating matched-action sequences. I wanted to take another stab at it before I go out for my project. In this short video, I intended to guide the viewer through a scene, change of time and place, match action sequences and practicing camera work techniques I have seen used frequently in the videos I look at.

The video starts with the character, Brogan, playing his guitar. He quickly sets it down and walks out of frame at 0:10 mark. Walking out of frame makes for a smooth transition to another location or shot. The first-matched action sequence begins at 0:12 as Brogan reaches for his covers. Two seconds later, the same action is continued from a different angle, again at the 0:16 mark and lastly 0:19 mark when he appears to be fast asleep. One might make the argument that having that many angles of the same action is needless. I don’t mind it in my practice.

A rack(un)focus of the lens begins at 0;20 and transition to a rack focus at 0:22 to convey a chance of place and time by distorting the image. 0:23-0:32 matches three shots of Brogan playing guitar from different angles. From one angle the muscles on his forearm contract at the same rhythm of the shots prior and to what can be heard from the amplifier. The shot of the foot pedal at 0:33 was something I kept in mind the entire time of the shoot. I thought it would save me in editing the sound because the actual set was 40 minutes long and never stopped in between songs. It made for a great transition shot.

Unmotivated camera movement can be seen at 0:38. What looks like a dolly shot is actually a tripod, or in this case a monopod, technique we learned from a video last term. It is a little shaky and not the smoothest, but it works. The last matched-action sequence last from 1:00 to 1:07 when Brogan wakes up from his dream, reaches for his phone, turns off the alarm and put his hand back on his head. He then moves out of frame again, which allows for another transition again.

My biggest takeaway from making this short is that I have proved to myself now that I can actually execute the techniques previously mentioned. I also learned that live events are hard. I think shooting in general is hard. There is an intimacy that is created with the camera. I couldn’t help being so close to my subject when recording and impairing the view at times of the people attending the show. It made Brogan a bit uncomfortable at times and I think that is something that I need to explain to my subjects before hand. I am gonna be all up in their personal space at times and we both have to manage being OK with that.

  1. Wow Eldrick this is great! I love how you did the soft focus to hard focus as a transition into Brogan’s dream sequence. I also thought the matched action of the iPhone alarm going off and Brogan hitting snooze was perfect. It looked really smooth! And the live shots looked really good, did you take the C100? Usually those venues have horribly low light, but your footage looked amazing!

    I’ve also had a similar experience when filming live events. It’s difficult to manage expectations sometimes because your subject obviously wants you to get sick shots, but at the same time a videographer up on stage can be pretty distracting. I like using telephoto lenses in situations like that because I can keep my distance without sacrificing the close ups. Also, as a cheat (sorry Wes!) I’ll film sound checks and then try to mix those shots with the live stuff. It works if you have a LOT of time for the edit afterward. Just make sure they play the same song during sound check one time through. And also that they wear their stage outfit during the sound check!
