TEP, the UO Career Center, and the College of Arts and Sciences invite faculty from across UO’s schools and colleges to consider joining a new, stipended learning and leadership community about integrating career readiness skills into courses and curricula.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers identifies key career readiness skills that resonate across UO’s Core Education and unit-level goals:

  • Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
  • Oral/Written Communications
  • Teamwork/Collaboration
  • Digital Technology
  • Leadership
  • Professionalism/Work Ethic
  • Career Management
  • Global/Intercultural Fluency

As the COVID pandemic impacts how faculty and students teach and learn, how workplaces function, and the career opportunities UO graduates face, these skills and the work of this Career Readiness CAIT (Community Accelerating the Impact of Teaching) are highly relevant–students need assignments and occasions designed to help identify and develop these skills.

And as UO builds sophisticated remote and fully online courses, sharing of career readiness and other core skill assignments and activities is timely, creating potential efficiencies for individual faculty as we draw on and amplify one another’s creativity.

We invite career- and tenure-related faculty to submit a brief letter of interest to tep@uoregon.edu that includes one “career readiness” teaching idea or assignment you have—any way you can imagine, or already do, underscore how what students are learning will transfer into a career context. Please also suggest why explicitly integrating career readiness content is especially interesting or challenging in your teaching context. Statements of interest are due June 17th, 2020 with a projected welcome meeting (hosted via Zoom) in the first week of July and subsequent meetings no more than three times a term during the AY20-21 academic year.

CAIT members will build and refine an archive of resources, encourage units to adopt and assess career readiness learning outcomes, and consider ways UO can support students as they face uncertain internship and job prospects.

What? Career Readiness Community Accelerating the Impact of Teaching group of 12-14 faculty members to receive $1K stipends for ~10 meetings and submission of teaching ideas and materials.

When?

  • June 17: Brief letter of interest with a sample teaching idea and reflections on the promise and challenge of career readiness teaching in your context due to tep@uoregon.edu
  • First week in July: Welcome meeting (via Zoom), looking at our collected ideas
  • AY20-21: No more than three meetings in each of fall, winter, and spring terms, remote participation welcome.

Why? Career readiness is an important topic, especially now. Let’s join forces to create exciting shared approaches and resources—and enjoy a new avenue of collegial connection.
