1.How did you meet the main criteria?

a. Our project is  mainly designed to help illuminate the shadow area in cities. So it can be placed on any site that may have this requirement.  Most shadow are causing by sky scrapers, so our tower is most likely to happen in city centers. To meet the main function that a city center needs, the base of the tower can either be empty, filled by commercial, by plaza, by transportation center or what ever it needs to be. It can be really flexible.

b. The central  tower is the solar energy storage station of the whole city, so it will be connecting with every single building that installs the solar membrane battery. Also, to meet the residential requirement for staffs, the light ring will connect the central tower with nearby residential areas.

c. Facade of the central tower can response to the movement of sun. It will rotate its panels to face towards the sun to get a maximum sunlight. The lower level  of the tower was getting smaller and then expending on the ground to not directly block sunlight toward other buildings. Also the solar simulation device will provide light that can help to make nearby plants grow.

d. Structure of the towers will be shearing wall in the center which also act as the vertical transportation tool. Light ring will be construct as the way we do to construct bridges. Property of its being a rigid body will enhance the central tower on horizontal direction. It is also connecting the horizontal transportation.

e. The building will give people a sense of future and also act as on of the landmark of the city. So the scale will be big and space inside will be wide.

2. How could you polish this for the competition.

We will concentrate more on our solar energy collecting system and give less detail about the staff residential area design. Also will reorganize our board and make the two boards more related and guide people a certain way to read the whole story. Detail diagram will be scaled bigger.

3. Review how you have grown this term — note you achievements.

My biggest achievement in this term is that I learned how to use Rhino and Grasshopper. Though still not an expert but this studio is a real quick ice breaking process for learning these soft wares!  I also tried to use new rendering tools, say Vary and Visualizer. And my skills of how to diagramming and concentrating on theme were improved.

4. How will you work on next term to reach your longterm goals?

I want to try use Revit next term and try to apply the way of modeling in grasshopper to Revit and still I will concentrate on sustainable design.

Due to the over population, more and more skyscrapers are built in big cities which make a lot of shadows under these highrise. People who living and working under the shadows will feel depressed. Plants and flowers also need sun light to grow. Our idea is to solve the shadow problem which is really severe in the center of big cities like New York, Tokyo, Shanghai and etc. So we are visioning a new center of city which can help the community to solve the shadow problem. Fortunately, we found a technology called “solar membrane battery” that we can use to collect sun light without blocking the sun light. We are imagining that this technology will be used on most of buildings in the cities so that we can collect the energy and reuse them to light the shadow areas. The central tower is used for energy storage and also have multiple functions like offices, commercials and restaurants. To optimize the solar energy collection of the central tower, we use  kinetic facade on our tower which every panel can rotate to gain the most solar energy. We also expand the bottom curtain wall of the tower to gain more solar energy and also can be a shield for the people on the ground level. We use the loops to connect the central tower with several residential buildings. The units in residential buildings all faces south and also can get light from lighting devices both on loops and central towers.
The reviewers really like our theme and said that it is really strong and clear. They gave us several advice about the layout. The diagrams are unreadable because of the size and the color. They also suggest us to look at Phair tower in Paris which we can study their form. To move forward, we have to concentrate more on the central tower and rethink the form and skin. We also have to show the advantage of the kinetic skin in the radiation diagram which can be more reliable. There also have some model problems we have to fix.
I have learned a lot in Grasshopper and Rhino this term. I also have learned how to do the video in Premiere which was really helpful in our presentation.
