LIB 410: Humanities Research Data Management Course Assistant

Pay Range: $1,906 – 2,273 per month
Duties:
The UO Libraries seeks an individual to support the teaching and learning of undergraduate students enrolled in LIB 410: Humanities Research Data Management.
About the Course
This course provides undergraduate students with theoretical and practical experience in collecting, processing, archiving, and publishing humanities data (images, video, sound, text, maps, etc.) gathered from galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs). With the goal of building thematic digital collections as researchers, students will learn digital methodologies focusing on the technical, legal, ethical, and social aspects of working with humanities research data throughout its curation lifecycle. This includes hands-on experience finding, assessing, organizing, and reformatting data; creating and remediating descriptive metadata; evaluating and determining copyright and licensing; writing a data management plan using the standards set by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and sharing thematic research digital collections using GitHub and the open-source platform CollectionBuilder.
The tasks include:
  • Grading assignments
  • Supporting Canvas and in-class discussions and activities
  • Assisting with in-class activities such as lectures and labs
  • Setting up and configuring Jekyll websites via GitHub Pages
  • Aiding students in curating and preserving humanities-based research data
  • Attending class and class preparation meetings
  • Holding office hours
  • Troubleshooting technology
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Coursework or research relevant to digital humanities, public humanities, cultural analytics, museum studies, media studies, digital history, digital art history, information science, and/or data science at the graduate or undergraduate level
  • Available Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00pm – 3:50pm PT
  • Demonstrated organizational ability
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and interpersonal skills
  • Interest and/or experience in information science and/or GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums)
Preferred Qualifications:
Recommendations from academic or work supervisors may help demonstrate teaching and communication skills but are not required
Preference will be given to graduate students involved or enrolled in the following programs:
  • Digital Humanities
  • The New Media and Culture Certificate
  • Environmental Studies
  • Historic Preservation
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies
  • Graduate Certificate in Non-Profit Management
