Introduction to Open Educational Resources & Textbook Affordability – ONLINE

Open Educational resources (OER) are free and openly licensed course materials that can be used to support teaching and learning. In this session, we’ll discuss what we know about how course material costs impact students at UO and the ways faculty can help lower these costs, which include adopting OER. We’ll discuss why some faculty use OER and what they see as the benefits, along with examples from UO faculty OER adopters and authors. Participants will have the opportunity to explore OER relevant to their discipline, and will learn more about current OER opportunities at UO, including our Pressbooks pilot and available funding to support lowering course costs.

Introduction to Pressbooks & Publishing Open Textbooks – ONLINE

Are you interested in publishing or adapting an open textbook for your course? Attend this one-hour workshop to learn about the University of Oregon Libraries’ pilot of an open textbook publishing platform, Pressbooks. Pressbooks allows faculty to easily create and publish accessible web books and format them into many different readable formats (PDF, ePUB & Web version). With Pressbooks, faculty can adapt, revise and append to openly licensed textbooks, courseware and academic content.

Participants will leave this workshop with a basic understanding of what you can make with Pressbooks and the ability to start creating materials using Pressbooks. This workshop will be held virtually via Zoom and pre-registration is required.

Advanced Pressbooks & Active Learning – ONLINE

In this session, we’ll build on learning from the “Intro to Pressbooks” workshop to learn how to integrate interactive content into Pressbooks web books. We’ll also dive into some more advanced tools that will allow you to customize books created on Pressbooks.

Pressbooks allows users to seamlessly integrate the web annotation tool Hypothesis and the interactive activity tool H5P into Pressbooks books. These tools allow authors to promote active learning in their books and facilitate student discussion. In this workshop you’ll use Pressbooks to create an interactive activity yourself and get hands-on experience using the tools we discuss.

This workshop will be held virtually via Zoom and pre-registration is required so that we can create your Pressbooks account ahead of time.
