Reflection on Goals: Marketing, Media, and Communications II

1. Gain more experience working in a collaborative group.

Through the Eugene Printmakers project I was able to gain more experience in working with a collaborative group. During each class we brainstormed ideas for marketing schemes. I enjoyed the different perspectives each member of the group offered and provided some unique, useful strategies.

2. Continue to build public speaking and presentation skills.

The various informal presentations I gave throughout the term assisted in the development of my public speaking skills. I prepared by outlining notes and specific talking points, as well as practicing audience engagement.

3. Gain better understanding of marketing techniques and how to utilize them in a professional setting.

The individual marketing plan I developed during the term was an excellent tool for utilizing my new knowledge of marketing strategies. I feel comfortable navigating the various strategies and applying them appropriately in the future.

4. Learn marketing specific strategies for nonprofit organizations.

Using the Lexicon essay to delve deeper into guerilla and experiential marketing helped to give the strategies context. Finding examples of each strategy made it easy to develop my own unique ideas and plans. I feel confident that I will be able to contribute relevant marketing strategies for a nonprofit organization.

5. Develop strategies for social media marketing and management.

The social media map assignment was an excellent tool for brainstorming several ideas and potential plans for social media marketing. Also, learning about management sites like Hootsuite will be useful for when I am working in an arts organization.

Reflections on Goals: Marketing, Media, and Communication

  1. Get more comfortable and confident with visual art and design.

The coursework for this class is absolutely geared to make students more comfortable and confident in design. The textbooks, comments from Eric, John, and classmates, and examples from previous students all aided me in reaching this goal. I always considered myself talentless in visual art, but now feel like (with the help from software) I can create nice images on my own.

  1. Create an organized, professional ePortfolio to display my work, goals, and accomplishments.

With the tutorial from Eric, I was definitely able to create a clean, organized ePortfolio. I try to update each section and page weekly, so I don’t create more work for myself later. I am also using the WordPress to create my Field Guide and have added some features to the JSMAC site with skills I learned in AAD 610.

  1. Gain marketing, media, and design skills, and build typography vocabulary.

The process of rebranding a logo and creating accompanying collateral assisted me in gaining these skills. The feedback I received from Eric, John, and my classmates allowed me to grow in my skills, as well. The design textbooks and Diigo materials were all great for learning new vocabulary not only in typography, but also in design.

  1. Learn to navigate design software and applications efficiently.

The first two weeks of class had a truly grim outlook. Luckily, with the guidance of Eric and John (and some encouragement from my neighboring classmates), I started learning the tricks that come with Illustrator and In Design. I feel far more confident and I know I can use the software efficiently.

  1. Apply knowledge to real-world opportunities by designing posters/ads for an organization.

I am happy to have the beginnings of a portfolio to share with any organizations I may apply to for work. I am confident I would be able to quickly and easily create an ad, poster, or other collateral as part of my job.
