Personal Learning Environment (PLE)

When I first began my Personal Learning Environment, I was completely lost. I have never taken time to reflect on how I learn, what my thought process is, or where I best thrive as a learner. Once I did take the time to reflect, my idea bubbles started to grow and multiply. Therefore, these thought bubbles represent my Personal Learning Environments! I then placed icons that best show what takes place in each component. The skewed and off-center placement of each icon represents my disorganized, chaotic thought process. Then, the driving force for each world is in the center the bubble and is a proportionally larger icon. The thought bubbles are emphasized with streams of music notes. This implies the musically driven (often times noisy) environment in which each thought comes from. Finally, I have three main components: personal, academic, and virtual.

I try to make my personal environment cozy, quiet, and reflective. I prefer to spend the majority of my free time outside, usually hiking or camping. Another large part of my personal world is cooking, eating, and drinking among friends and family. I love learning from others through discussion and conversation. I have had some of my most meaningful conversations sitting around a campfire or the dinner table.

My academic world revolves around the University of Oregon, but mainly through the Arts and Administration department. When I am not in the classroom, I am in one of the UO’s many libraries completing assignments and working diligently. Because I have such a chaotic, loud thought process, the silence and focus of the library is my haven.

The virtual element seems to be my largest and most detailed environment, which directly relates to the endless availability of resources on the Internet. Of course, at the center, is Apple. The majority of the electronic items I use daily are Apple products, and it is my preferred operating system. I use my laptop to research class materials, read articles, and complete assignments, as well as unwind with streaming music and video. Lastly, I use my iPhone to connect with long-distance friends and family and listen to Podcasts. As I mentioned before, I learn best from others’ experiences, so each Podcast I listen to has an element of storytelling of real-life adventures.
