Objective: The topic of unit three is ‘What is Art?’ and there were three unit objectives put into place for us to reach and accomplish through our blog posts and responses. These three unit objectives are:
- Consider the origins of art
- Explore a brief history of Western Art
- Examine multiple perspectives for evaluative art
Artifact(s):
2) ‘What is Art for? Essay Assignment’ blog post
Reflection: After looking through all my unit three blog posts and responses, I believe that I was able to meet all three unit objectives through my ‘What is Art?’ blog post and ‘What is Art for? Essay Assignment’ blog post.
The first objective is being able consider the origins of art. I was able to to show that I did this through both my unit three blog posts; ‘What is Art?’ and ‘What is Art for? Essay Assignment’. In my ‘What is Art?’ blog post, I explained that everyone has a different views and reactions to artworks due to his or her point of view. Because a person’s point of view is based on psychological factors, you could infer that art or how people view art originates first inside the viewers mind. I also went on to talk about how Dissanayake explained in his reading that the idea of art includes all of human history whether it’s Paleolithic or earlier, and that it includes all human societies meaning anthropological (1991). These ideas were also talked about in my ‘What is Art for? Essay Assignment’ blog post.
The second objective tests whether I was able to explore a brief history of Western Art. This objective was easily met because in the unit three reading by Dissanayake, she introduced multiple eras throughout history and the variety of art definitions that people of these eras believed in. I gave examples of the different eras that Dissanayake talked about in my ‘What is Art for? Essay Assignment’ blog post. With each era I mentioned, I also gave the theories about art that corresponded to that era. For example, I talked about how in the Medieval times art wasn’t viewed on aesthetic bases but through religion.
The last objective challenges me to examine multiple perspectives for evaluating art, which I was able to show through both my unit three blog posts. In the ‘What is Art?’ blog post, I first talked about my own perspective on art and compared it to that of Dissanayake’s, which she mentioned in the reading. I then went on to explain that everyone will have a different perspective and reaction to a piece of art because of his or her point of view. On the other hand, like I mentioned before in my ‘What is Art for? Essay Assignment’ blog post, I mentioned different eras and the variety of perspectives on art that were associated with them. Things like perspectives, beliefs, science, and art change over time; people in the Medieval times have a different perspective on art compared to people in today’s society.
Future goals: I believe the objectives for this unit were very fitting and challenged us. Another objective that I would suggest in the future would be to define what art mean’s to them and explore what type of perspectives may influence this. When it comes to what I wrote about in my blogs and responses, I wouldn’t change them because even though it may have taken multiple posts, I still was able to meet all the objectives for this unit.
