In this unit’s reading, Comparing Cultures the author talks about how most undergraduate courses are taught. I must say that the author’s description is pretty spot on. Most of the courses I’ve taken consist of me showing up to a huge lecture where the professor recites the lecture slides. Not to mention, the professors who have consistently taught the same course for multiple terms will use the same material every term. This way of teaching is not effective and like Lessig states, “Students don’t listen to lectures” (pg. 86). I don’t know about you but I get bored when professors just stand there and read off of the slides and other things usually distract me.
Moreover, Lessig introduces the way that law school courses teach their students which is through an active forum method. This method allows students to participate in the lecture and gain active knowledge. In my opinion, this active forum method is much more effective for learning. Even if a student is not participating in the discussion this method requires the students to be attentive during the lecture. I agree with Lessig’s statement that, “This form of education teaches responsibility as well as the subject. It develops an ethic as well as knowledge about a particular field” (pg. 86). I wish that more courses were like this because I find it easier to learn.

I agree with you that lecture classes are not very inciting when the professor plainly stands in the front of the class and reads off of the slides. I believe it is the professors job to keep their students engaged while introducing new and creative ways to explain and introduce concepts. Furthermore, I believe you can tell when a professor truly does not care or feel passionate about the content that he or she is presenting. With this absence of presence, the students directly feed off of this energy. I thought that going from high school to college this type of dynamic would change. Did you have similar expectations going into a university?
I think that there is a time and place for lecture, but in most academic settings, lectures do leave something to be desired. With class sizes getting bigger each year, it’s tough to effectively engage every student at a personal level. In an ideal world, a active forum method would be instituted in every curriculum, but that just doesn’t seem practical in 300-500 person class. Lectures are the most efficient way to disburse information to a large amount of people. The burden of learning falls heavier on the student in those situations. They need to actively listen, visit office hours, engage with the material outside of class, etc., in order to get the most out of a lectured class.
I agree to an extent about the benefits of forum style of learning. In some forms it is extremely effective. One such example is in this class. Here we have the freedom to read and watch the lectures and then discuss it with peers. In some forms I think there needs to be more structure to a class. For example in a math class there needs to be more lecture, but there could still be a benefit to the forum style. Allowing team work to solve issues is great. So I think there are benefits from both styles with an emphasis on one or the other depending on the subject being looked at.
