Sports Center Uniforms Are Finally Here!

ESPN has always been very clever with their commercials for its main attraction Sports Center. They could easily throw together some highlight reels and have an athlete simply address the audience at the end, but with their 30 seconds they generally like to make some kind of statement relevant in the sports world today. With their latest ad it has been discussed as poking fun at the size of the uniforms the athletes are wearing on the field. As Jordan Teicher said it in his article, “Nike keeps shrinking the unis that aren’t made for everyone (cough, offensive linemen).” The new commercial for Sports Center features sports anchors trying to fit in to their new skintight uniforms that are similar to that of Cat Woman’s costume.

When I saw this commercial I immediately laughed because of the end when Steve Levy and John Buccigross thank each other for helping one another get in to the wetsuit looking uniform. Is there athletes in the locker room that actually have to help one another squeeze into their uniforms before a big game? Is it coming to that? There has always been a trend in the technology of swimsuits and as a result they have been getting tighter and tighter over the years, but there is no need for uniforms to be so tight in football. I can continue naming plenty of sports that could use the technology that is being introduced into uniforms for football, but those sports are not as highly advertised as the NFL for example.

Primetime football is one of the highest viewed television shows of all and it is the best place for companies such as Nike and Adidas to have their merchandise on display. In no way, shape or form will Oregon Football for example credit their uniforms for helping them win a game, and yet Nike keeps outfitting the team with the newest uniforms. There are plenty of other sports on the same campus that could benefit from new technology that is being focused in higher popularized places.
