Is Future Coast realistic?

I think that the exercise we did with Future Coast was very interesting in the sense that we got to see and hear different scenarios that could possibly happen in the future. One aspect that I thought made this more realistic was hearing people’s voices and the emotion that came out of some of them. It was also very fun figuring out a scenario and making the actual phone call. But I had some thoughts that went through my head as we were doing this that made me question if the Future Coast project was realistic.

I know that the Future Coast project is to make people aware of climate change and what might happen in the future. But, it made me wonder just about technology in general. None of the messages were positive, and none really seemed like they could be realistic. It is hard for me to picture what could possibly happen in the future with climate change. I also started to wonder if there were even voicemails being left in the future. I feel like leaving voicemails is a dying cause since people already do not leave voicemails unless it is an important message for someone or an office call. Do we think that in the future we could look back at these voicemails and see what was said and then compare what is actually happening? I’m not really sure what it would be like, but I think it would be interesting to be able to look back on these messages and compare what was said and what is actually happening.  Contine reading

What I Have Learned So Far, And Why I Enjoy This Class

For this blog post I decided to write and reflect about what I have learned throughout the term. When I initially signed up for this class, I figured it was just going to be another ordinary boring English class. Mr. Siperstein really opened my eyes to how English can be not only interesting, but can also inform you about something that is not just English. I have learned so much more about climate change within the past 8 weeks than I think I have learned throughout my whole life.

Climate change is something that I never thought was a huge deal until this class. Throughout the readings I have learned about climate change in a fictional way, which I never thought about. These readings include, “Diary of an Interesting year”, “Time Capsule Found on the Dead Planet” and many more. These two stories impacted me by the style that they were written. The “Diary of an Interesting Year” was written, obviously like a diary which showed me the emotion that the protagonist was feeling and helped me see what it could be like if the climate were to change the way that it did in that story. Also, in the story “Time Capsule Found on Dead Planet” had an interesting style in the way it was written by having different ages in each paragraph. For example the first age was about Gods, the second was about money, etc. This lead into how our world once was and how our deserts are created to show that all deserts are in different forms now. These two stories were the opening stories to the class and I already learned so much about how everyone needs to start being aware about climate change because these twostories are both taken place in the futures are what could possibly happen to humans during climate change.

Rally 2/13/15

At the Divestment Rally on Friday I realized that so many people are so passionate about this subject. It really opened my eyes into how fossil fuels are really impacting our planet. When I first walked up to the rally I was a little intimidated and did not really know what to expect. I thought it was actually a little intimidating. But, once I walked under the tent a lady came up to me very friendly and asked me to sign their petition. I happily did so, and immediately felt more welcomed.

Once the rally started the chants I though were very compelling. They created a message not only by what they were saying but how they were saying it. It was the strength in what they all believed in made me take a step back and look at this through there eyes and how much strength it takes to stand up for what they believe in.

This strike reminded me a lot of the GTF strike that happened at the end of fall term. Although there was not as many of them, and no one really knew about this rally, I think that these people that were yelling the chants were so much more into what they were saying and you could hear how much they care in their voices. They also had quite a few speakers during this rally that shows people what their thoughts and outlooks are on this subject. They are trying to get their voices heard so that more people are aware about climate change and the use of fossil fuels.

I really enjoyed this rally. I thought it gave me a new perspective on how fossil fuels are detrimental to our lives.

Will Technology Take Over Our Weather?

Learning about the Canadian oil sands really opened my eyes. It showed me how people are the reason for this climate change that is happening to our planet. I thought it was interesting how in the photo essay the photographer got to capture every moment and makes the reader feel like they are there in the airplane with the photographer. One picture that really grabbed my attention was the picture with the caption, “The ponds are vast and some look more like lakes” [(Johnson) I tried to insert the photo from the blog onto this post, but it was not working]. This was an unbelievable picture to me because I cannot believe that those ponds are oil, sand and water mixtures. This makes me question why people on our planet are doing this? I understand that we need oil in our lives to be functioning humans, but why do we have to take up this much territory? Why can’t we just keep it more contained in a smaller area? I also thought the photo of the memorial of the family that passed away was extremely sad. I notice how dangerous this type of oil mining factory is. I believe that if it is as harmful where there is a death something needs to be changed, but I feel like nothing is going to be changed.

Climate Change: I Never Thought It Would Happen To Us

Climate change is something that is happening right now in this day and age. Just by being in this class within the last week, I have learned so much more and have become more aware about climate change. The readings that were assigned for the first class, I really enjoyed. The stories “A Fable for Tomorrow” and the story by Margaret Atwood, “Time Capsule Found on the Dead Planet” were both very similar but different at the same time. They both have similar messages that they are trying to convey that the human race is to blame for global warming. Although I inferred the same message from the two stories they were both diverse than one another. “A Fable for Tomorrow” was more of an imaginative story, that created a clear picture of the land that was eventually destroyed. In the story, “Time Capsule Found on the Dead Planet” I though it was more of a dark interesting way of view on society. After we were assigned the blog post of Global Weirding, I really started to think that these stories are really implying that we are the reason global warming is happening. The way that the Global Weirding sight really scared me because it was so real and made me start thinking that if our society does not make a change then our planet will soon have so much damage no human can fix. That really scares me. These two stories really connected with me once I started looking really in depth to the blog. One part that I really connected to in Margaret Atwood’s story in age three, when it says, “money became a God. It was all powerful and out of control” (192). This quote really opened my eyes because it is true that our society cares a huge amount of their life to money. Throughout my life I just have noticed people that have only wanted to do what makes them the most money and not what is the right thing to do. I think this is such a big issue in our country that needs to be fixed, but I know that it probably won’t be. Our planet is so important to everyone that lives on it, and it seems like (at least to me) that no one really caring about the climate change that is happening to OUR planet that we live on. The other assignment we had to do was find out what was happening to our hometowns. I am from Orange County, Ca and when I looked up what was happening to Orange County it really scared me and hit home because this is where I grew up and where I have lived my whole life, and seeing the increase for wildfires is about to rise immensely, and that the sea level rises nearly everyday is a scary thought, because no one ever thinks this is going to happen to them. I personally was never really aware about what is going on in our planet until I started this class. Climate change is something that everyone needs to be aware of, and people need to start making it aware to everyone.
