Become An Associate

Who are the Writing Associates?

Writing Associates are advanced English majors/minors and Clark Honors students who are excellent writers and critical thinkers

English majors/minors, and Clark Honors students invested in writing, with overall GPAs of 3.50 or higher and junior or senior standing for the start of the following academic year may enroll in WR 312, a credit-bearing course offered each fall that introduces the ethics of tutoring writing, practical tutoring techniques, and theories of teaching. To go onto become tutoring Associates, WR 312 students must earn an A- or higher in this course and extensively revise a competitive writing sample.

WR 312 Course Learning Outcomes

This course provides the opportunity to:

1) Read, analyze, and apply ideas from a variety of theoretical texts to prepare for Writing Associates tutoring sessions

2) Build a collaborative community of Writing Associates to support one another and expand each other’s revision habits and understanding of tutoring practice and teaching theory

3) Employ logic, creativity, and interpretive skills to produce thoughtful, persuasive arguments in response to pertinent scholarship and peer feedback

4) Practice and model the skills needed for focused, analytical essays with clear and accurate prose, and deepening revision habits

5) Develop a deeper understanding of college-level writing by participating in academic discussions about writing assessment and teaching pedagogy

6) Engage with ideas and arguments from a variety of research sources to develop and refine your writing and tutoring skills

How does the program work?

Once accepted into the program, Writing Associates are invited to enroll in a variable-credit internship (ENG 404), which places them as tutors in our program. This internship is paired with a co-requisite (ENG 399), variable-credit course that supports their work as tutors and provides professional development activities targeted to enhance their individual, professional, and educational goals. Writing Associates may participate in the program for as many terms as they remain eligible and desire to continue.
