Student Support

This tutoring program focuses on students gaining the tools and confidence to improve as writers.

Writing Associates Do

  • Offer 50-minute one-on-one tutoring sessions on any stage of the writing process:
    • outlining/brainstorming
    • drafting
    • clarifying ideas
    • applying feedback
    • developing arguments including thesis statements, reasoning, and support
    • revising
    • researching  
  • Support student agency and individual learning needs throughout the writing process
  • Encourage writing improvement with strengths-driven suggestions
  • Help students clarify their ideas by asking questions
  • Model how to find and solve writing problems  
  • Refer students to library resources
  • Encourage students to seek additional assistance from their instructors as needed  
  • Direct students’ grading questions or concerns to instructors
  • Send follow-up emails to students and instructors, which
    • help the student remember the content of the session and recommendations for next steps 
    • provide the instructor with evidence of the appointment and the details of the session  

Writing Associates Don’t

  • Provide arguments or interpretations, alter content, or otherwise do students’ writing work for them 
  • “Fix,” proofread, or edit student essays 
  • Reteach course content 
  • Replace the instruction students receive from class
  • Discuss grades
  • Produce “perfect” writing

When scheduling an appointment  

  • You will need your course number and your instructor’s name
  • You must book at least 24 hours in advance
