Why adopt a user-centered design process?

Over the past term, I’ve had a lot of conversations with designers and developers about how to talk to clients and administrators about the importance of implementing a user-centered design process. Often they are asked to just implement a solution, get the website up, and not bother with asking lots of questions about requirements, objectives, audience or content. The dangers in this approach are many, including building solutions that don’t meet users’ needs, increased time and costs to fix usability and content issues after implementation and the failure to decrease support costs or increase user engagement.
