Canal Tour and Last Days of Study Abroad (July 28th and 29th)

July 28

On Sunday we went on a super relaxing and awesome canal tour through the city. Another alternative transportation mode! Adam and Flores (the tour guides) joined us, along with Adam’s wife and adorable daughter Penelope. We all sat around, drank wine, and ate bread and cheese. It was very chill. That’s pretty much all there is to know.

Monday was pretty much our last day together. This is where the bittersweet and melancholy hit me a bit. This is where to some people, I would be saying goodbye. We had a very fancy dinner at a restaurant overlooking the main canal.

The Last Supper.

Each student gave a two-minute presentation on their final project and what they would be taking away from this trip. I gave mine about my thesis. I realized over the course of study abroad that bicycle transportation is not simply something I could study for eight weeks in the summer. It is also something I can study and discover further, which I plan on doing when I return to the states. My thesis will examine how cycling infrastructure can be better implemented in the US based on European models. This thesis will be made all the easier by the first-hand research I have gathered over the course of the summer.

After presentations, we continued to eat. Dylan came up with the idea to write everyone short notes as a way to give all in the group a proper send off. While we were working on this, Kyra and Brenna instructed everyone to vote on superlatives, as one would do at the end of high school. (I won Group Dad and tied for Best Sense of Humor.) Then, as a token of our appreciation, Marc and Rebecca gave Adam and Flores (in attendance, as well as Ronald) a parting gift. They both receiving hats that said, in fitting with the overall theme of the trip, “It Could Be Worse / World Tour 2019.” I want one for myself.

Some among the group were desperate to know if we truly were the best group of all time. Adam informed us that, to truly be the best group ever, we would need to come out to karaoke with himself and Flores that evening. So we did! I went to a karaoke bar for the first time and sang some songs with most of the class (“Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty and “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay, for those wondering.) I had an early train to catch the next day, but that did not stop me from singing until about 12:30 in the morning in one last hurrah with the group. I went to sleep that night saddened to be leaving everyone, but happy that the trip had been such a blast. I couldn’t have imagined a better study abroad experience.

  2. Last summer weekend I took my kids to Cincinnati, I’ve been wanting to show them this city for a long time because I used to live here. When we got there, we rented a van and I took them to all the sights of the city and they loved it, and it’s not surprising because it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the US more details

  3. Study abroad experience is especially valuable as it helps to better understand how sustainable transportation systems work in different cities. For students who want to share their impressions or prepare a trip report, it is useful to use the support of professional essay writing companies to make their text more structured and convincing. Such resources help students to express their thoughts and analyze international experience in a high-quality manner.

  4. Sounds like an unforgettable night! Rocking “Free Fallin’” and “Viva La Vida” at karaoke? Legendary move. Now, where do I get one of those It Could Be Worse / World Tour 2019 hats? Also, if you can handle karaoke, you can definitely handle Drift Boss—time to put those reflexes to the test!
