Another day, another sweaty bike through Amsterdam. This, purportedly, was the last day of the heat wave that had been crushing us for the past three days. As a result, our afternoon bike tour through the city with Meredith was moved up to the morning. Meredith showed us the original port building of Amsterdam where the city used to receive goods from incoming trade ships. Nowadays, the building lies in the heart of the Red Light District (more on that later). Later on the ride, we stopped by an intersection that was previously crowded with traffic signals.
The city initiated a trial period wherein they removed all the signals from the intersection, replacing them with yield triangles and signs. Though locals were concerned that safety would lag with the new design, the result has been a safer intersection with improved traffic flow. It was quite a sight; just while we were sitting there we saw cars, pedestrians, cyclists, and the city tram (read: light rail) navigate the intersection with ease.
As we were nearing the end of our ride, we noticed people moving into a tall apartment building.
They were using the dolly system attached to most buildings in Amsterdam to hoist furniture and items into the high apartment;
the first time I had seen the system in action. At first I was surprised they were using the thing at all– then I imagined hauling furniture up a narrow staircase in this heat. I changed my mind quickly after that.
Following our bike tour, we had a class debrief with Meredith regarding bicycle transportation in Amsterdam, its history, and our general impressions of biking in the city. She showed us what the shared space by the ferry landing looked like before; I couldn’t have imagined it if I tried. The car lanes and traffic signals just did not make sense given its current construction and ease of travel. The Dutch seem to know how to create simple solutions to complex problems, as I noticed when I visited the restroom.
A small fly painted onto the porcelain urinal screamed “Pee on me!” and I obliged. Great way to keep the pee in the urinal, I suppose!
Later in the evening, we met with three local tour guides for a guided tour of the Red Light District. I’ll be honest, I was not looking forward to this tour. In addition to the heat, the idea of being a part of a hoard of tourists hearing the same old shpiel about sex workers from some old white dudes did not seem like the proper way to see the area. Turns out I was pleasantly surprised. While our tour guide did tell some slightly off-color jokes which probably didn’t land with everyone in the group (but I thought were within reason),
he also answered our more serious questions thoughtfully and with a clear respect for the “ladies.” (As he explained, guides refer to the women as “ladies” or “sex workers” rather than “prostitutes” as a means to uphold their dignity and humanity.) When we asked about the women’s backgrounds and problems related to sex trafficking, our guide did not shy away from discussing difficult topics. Instead he openly addressed violence and sex trafficking within the Netherlands as well as how the migrant crisis related to the Red Light District. I was pleasantly surprised by his openness and honesty in discussing a place he knew so well. Perhaps the nicest part of the tour was complimentary drinks in the historic Falconer home, which was built in the 1200s. The home’s overhead beams come from ships’ masts from the mid-1500s and are each unique to specific ships.
Each floorboard comes from an individual tree, and the boards remain unbroken across the length of the floor. While arbitrary by today’s standards, back in mid-1500s Netherlands, where trees do not grow in large quantities, this was an incredible display of wealth. We finished our tour in the basement where the old kitchen remains. Many of the tiles on the wall are original to the home. There, we learned the home is around 3,800 square meters (or 40,000 square feet). That is a lot of space for one family. Oh, and they found a dead body at the bottom of the house well! The tour guides believe it was probably an unwanted child such as a child with mental illness, which in those days would have been taboo to even discuss publicly. The tour was a good end to a long, hot, but enjoyable day. It also allowed me to engage in my travel pursuits while still learning abroad, which I greatly appreciated.
