Ichishkíin Teacher Pathways at University of Oregon

Option 1: 

Undergraduate Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) Major with Ichishkíin Pathway

Undergraduate students at the University of Oregon who are interested in becoming a Ichishkíin language teacher can now complete the Ichishkíin teacher pathways within the interdisciplinary Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) major! To fulfill the requirements for this track, students need to meet with the NAIS director (Dr. Lana Lopesi llopesi@uoregon.edu) to declare their major. Students will take specific coursework in Ichishkíin, including 3 years of Ichishkíin courses, as well as EDST 456: Decolonization and Education.

Students who choose to pursue NAIS/Ichishkíin pathway should contact Keegan Livermore (keegan_livermore@yakama.com) at the Yakama Nation Language Program during their first year of classes to create a plan for the Yakama Nation’s First People’s Language, Culture, and Oral Traditions Certificate. 

Students pursuing NAIS/Ichishkíin are highly encouraged to complete a Educational Foundations Minor

In the Educational Foundations minor, students take EDST 406: Field Experience for Future Secondary Teachers. In this class, students will complete their placement hours in an Ichishkíin classroom setting.

Option 2:

Graduate Level Yakama Ichishkíin Teacher Pathway with UOTeach/Sapsik’ʷałá Program

In this pathway, students will earn a Master’s in Education (MEd) Curriculum and Teaching through the UOTeach Masters Program and (if applicable) the Sapsik’ʷałá Teacher Education Program.

Students who choose this option will complete their student teaching placement in an Ichishkíin classroom setting and take ALL required UOTeach/Sapsik’ʷałá coursework.

Before applying to option 2, students are required to contact Keegan Livermore (keegan_livermore@yakama.com) at the Yakama Nation Language Program to document language proficiency and create a plan for First People’s Language, Culture, and Oral Traditions Certification.

Eligibility for Option 2:

  • Students may fulfill Option 1 (see above) and in their last year of NAIS/undergraduate studies, apply to UOTeach/Sapsik’ʷałá
  • Students may fulfill language proficiency requirements through the Yakama Language Program

This option requires a completion within a graduate level program, students must complete a bachelors degree in either NAIS/Ichishkíin or an equivalent degree AND show proficiency in Ichishkíin through the Yakama Nation Language Program prior to applying
