Art, Games, and Technology Research

After reading “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins” by Beverly Jones, the main idea I got was both old patterns of art and technology had huge impacts on our society, and art and computer graphics influenced our culture as well. He talked about how it via the timeline old and the new ideological and material consolidation, and how they are related and influence each other. He said that “old cultural patterns may fade or become more evident; that is they may be deemphasized or emphasized” (Jones 51). To explain it better, he also said that “new computer graphics users bring additional assumptions and considerations of… however, some traces of the origins… remain in these” (Jones 21). History is fundamental for today. I say that because people were affected by past naturally, and I think this is how everything works. She also gave lots of interesting examples to show her points like egg tempura paintings, earlier papyrus columns are examples of origin of oil painting and stone columns of ancient Egyptian architecture (Jones 51). I found that it excites me to explore not only the new possibilities but also older histories.

Another thing I found out interesting was Jones explained the development trend from two dimensional graphic imagery into three dimensional graphic imagery. Jones said in her essay that “with the development of ray-tracing techniques, particle systems, and other techniques depicting three dimensional world and dynamic systems within it, technical imagery outstripped the planar illusionism previously practiced by artists” (Jones 54). I can’t help thinking how grateful human are for such huge improvements and invitations. I recently watched a movie called “Interstellar” which shows what four or even five dimensions look like by imagination. I believe human beings will figure out how these dimensions really work in someday in the future, and I am so with I can see that.

The last point I want to discuss is about the connection between artists and computer scientists. I think this is also very interesting because many people don’t expect such connection in these two area. In my opinion, or pervious opinion, computer scientists are more like boring and un-creative people who stay in front of computers all the time. Whereas artists are a group of people who represents freedom, creative, and un-limitation. However, after reading this essay, I found that they have lots of things in common. They both are working on changing or building better world for human, and they are like both sides of a hand. For example, computer scientists using computers or other techniques to create beauty things for human, where artists more likely to use traditional ways to do the same thing. And I believe they will have overlapping someday and our world will be much better at that time.
