In its 28th year, the student group Oregon Law Students Public Interest Fund (OLSPIF) broke its previous fundraising records. OLSPIF members held a successful auction to fund student stipends for summer legal work at nonprofits. In addition, OLSPIF secured a $20,000 gift from the Carol and Velma Saling Foundation.
As a result of its success, OLSPIF awarded 15 stipends to students who had legal positions with a wide range of nonprofits. The nonprofits where law students worked include Access the Law; Gideon’s Promise; Legal Aid Services of Oregon; Northwest Worker’s Justice Project; Oregon Law Center; Our Children’s Trust; and Youth, Rights, & Justice.

Co-director Casey Dreher, who led the group with Kelsey Cunningham, explained that “the engagement of students, staff, faculty, and donors allowed OLSPIF to reach new heights.” He noted that the success of OLSPIF is important because “law students’ work in public interest positions has a positive impact on underserved legal populations and can truly change students’ lives.”
Stipend recipient Alex Huntly-Romanow who worked at Access the Law this summer explained that his OLSPIF stipend helped provide legal services to those who otherwise could not afford attorneys. Through Access the Law, he worked with local veterans in need of quality legal services. “OLSPIF allowed me to do this work in the public interest and pursue the goal of a more equitable and just legal system,” said Alex.
Plans are already underway to fund stipends for law students in the summer of 2020. With hopes of raising the bar even further, OLSPIF will host its 25th Annual Auction on Friday, February 7, 2020, in the EMU Ballroom.
