2020 Thanksgiving sunset at the Oregon Coast

Hi,

Okay, all the comics have been printed out and are looking great!  Remember that for our showcase Monday you all will need to be ready to staple, cut, and do other formatting to get those books ready to hand out to the class.

Again also be ready for some campus guests to drop in, I have already received a couple of RSVPs.  And again remember we will be in Global Scholars Hall 132 for the showcase.

And other items of business as we wind down the term:

  1. “Name Your Achievement” proposals are due next Friday, December 3 (by the end of the day).
  2. Abstract/Introduction and YouTube Showcase Guidelines available here: https://blogs.uoregon.edu/myvisualstory/files/2021/11/My-Visual-Story-Fall-2021-Abstract-and-YouTube-Showcase-Guidelines.pdf, and these are due Wednesday, December 8th by 3:00pm.

Hope in whatever you are doing over the short November holiday break that you are able to rest and enjoy some time off.

See you next week!

Best,

Robert and Giovanna

Week Eight: Almost There!

students looking at museum exhibit on comicsOkay we about there for the comic book projects!  The ones being worked on in class and turned in so far are amazing!  Looking forward to everyone’s final versions!

Remember that your comic projects are due the end of this week (Friday the 19th, Week 8).  If you are providing an electronic version of your comic book (PDF is our preference, but ask about other formats) then it is due before midnight Friday, November 19th.  If you are going to turn in a physical copy for us to make photocopies of we need that copy before noon Friday, November 19th, the last moment to get them to us will be when Giovanna is at the EMU Fishbowl from 11:00am to noon.

Next Monday (Nov. 22nd) be ready to discuss together what you have learned this term about comics and art, and we will provide instructions about the posting of your comic books, a video introduction, and written intro/abstract about your comic book work on the website.

And see below for upcoming social and academic events that Giovanna is coordinating or calling your attention to.

Been a pretty low-key class we know, and hope everyone was able to kick back with our classes and enjoy the time to work on your comic book projects.  It has been a good term working with everyone, and we are very much looking forward to finishing strong these next couple of weeks.

Best,

Robert and Giovanna

Upcoming Socials and Academics

  1. Crafting event and studio time on Thursday, 7:30 PM-9:00 PM (contact Giovanna about location details). This event counts as both an academic and social event. Week Seven: Planning Ahead Academically and Two Work Weeks Left

All,

student working on comic book in classroomHi, again we are fast approaching the due date (Friday, November 19th) for your final comic book designs.  This is the end of Week 8, which allows us to start printing them out/making copies to have those ready for the final showcase happening during Monday’s class of Week 10.  And also if you are done before this due date please send us your digital file or get us your original copy early.

Next Monday’s class will be a full work studio time.  We will expect to see progress towards your final comics (75% to 95% finalized progress), and we will expect you to bring in your work and art supplies/tablets/etc. to really take advantage of the full studio time.

For your two-year academic plan achievement:  If you missed today’s class, please follow the instructions under “sign up for classes”  (slides 9-11) in the presentation and build your schedule builder cart. Screenshot your cart and send it to Giovanna by Monday, November 15 for credit. If you were in class today, you do not need to submit anything.

Additionally, we will be having some upcoming ‘social’ and ‘academic’ events, if you have not let Giovanna know your upcoming schedule please do so ASAP.  Remember that you need to take part in two of both the ‘social’ and ‘academic’ events to receive your main passing “Socialization” Achievement.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Best,

Robert and Giovanna

Week Six: Reflection, Academic Plans, and Moving to Final Stages

hand using pen to ink comic book panelHi,

We are wrapping up Week 6 of the term and it is going fast!  We have enjoyed our 1:1 meetings this term, and remember to meet with Robert next week if you signed up for a Week 7 meeting.

For this upcoming Monday class, Giovanna will be presenting about your 2-Year Academic Plans.  Remember that this will be based off your work on My Visual Story Creative Journal Three: October 25th  (PDF logo PDF File).

Additionally for Monday we will be handing out the Name Your Achievement My Visual Story Fall 2021 (PDF logo PDF File) proposal sheet.  We will go over this in class, but basically it is a proposal for you to name your own Achievement for the term; as in something you wanted to learn more about, or improve your skills around this first term of your college career and you would like to get credit for doing.

And of course a huge reminder to keep on track with your comic book work.  Remember to use the Journal #4 checklist to help stay on track.  For example, note that we are expecting you to be wrapping up with ALL your drafting out and sketching out of your designs, panels, and pages next week; and that you will be diving in next week to your final inking, coloring, lettering, and formatting the comic for printing/copying (which again the final version is due Friday, November 19th, end of Week 8).  See below for the specifics.

Best,

Robert and Giovanna
