Week Nine (Thanksgiving Holiday)

food and plates and glass and lit candle on dinner table Hi,

Just a very quick message this week and remember that Giovanna will be in the EMU this Monday (Nov. 25th) to collect your comic books for us to make copies, she will be there between noon and 1:30pm.

If you have electronic scans please email those to me.

And if you are not able to get to us your comic books on Monday and you need the copy center form please email me ASAP so I can send that to you.

Let me know if you have any questions!

And again wishing everyone safe travels and a wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Best,

Robert

Week Eight (Nov. 22) – Coming Down to the End

Hi,

This is it, closing down on the final part of the term!  Yes, it is going, and has gone by fast!

For this week:

  1. Remember what we do for most of this Friday’s session is going to be up to the class: What do you want to do after we do the First-Year surveys?  It is up to you!  Chat about this and let me and Giovanna know the plans for Friday.  And again:
    • It cannot cost me or Giovanna money, unless you all want to cover the costs,
    • and most importantly it cannot be “we decide to not have class”!
  2. Other Social and Academic events: Remember to track the conversations on chat about the upcoming “Friendsgiving” (I think that is what Giovanna called it!) and study sessions.
  3. Comic book work:
    • Keep working on your comic books and checking off your progress on Journal #7,
    • Important Due Date: November 25th = final versions turned in to Robert and Giovanna for us to print/copy them!  We will go over arrangements for turning these in during our class this Friday.
    • If you plan to print/copy using the Copy Center, I will have the instructions for this process for you this Friday.
  4. Journal #8 (final Journal of the term) is due this Friday!
  5. AND if you have any outstanding items to turn in (Journals, 2-year plan, other) you need to get those to me ASAP.  Term is winding down and I will be finalizing your Achievements over the last couple of weeks of the term.

And as always please let me know if you have any questions.

See everyone Friday!

Best,

Robert

Week Seven (Nov. 15) – Back to Our Comic Work!

pile of comic zinesHi,

For this week we are shifting back our focus on working on your comics.  Remember to look through and check off your progress on your Journal #7.  And again this Friday will be an “open” studio work session, so bring your comic pages and art supplies.

Also we will try and set aside a little time this Friday for Giovanna to help you all discuss any ENG 280 (or ENVS 203) topics from the week that have been especially challenging.  Along those lines after the “Continue reading →” jump for this posting are my notes from our brainstorming session last Friday.

As always please let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns.

Best,

Robert

Week Six (Nov. 8) – Let’s Discuss the FIG Topics

word balloonHi,

For this week we will be doing discussion activities around the two Journal #6 prompts:

  1. What are the cultural and political connections between what has been covered so far in ENVS 203 ‘Introduction to Environmental Studies: Humanities’ and the themes found in Under the Feet of Jesus?
  2. In what ways has what you have learned so far in ENG 280 helped with your comic book design?

(Think specifically about the learning objective found in the ENG 280 syllabus that talks about understanding the comic book “medium’s complex interplay of word and image as well as the role of cultural factors in the publication history of comics.”)

After our discussion at the end of class last Friday, I am thinking to focus a bit more on the comic book question and ENG 280.  So be ready to bring in your thoughts and questions about comic books!

Also remember to be in contact with Giovanna about upcoming out of class social and academic events.

And finally remember your “office hours” meeting time with me, and again here is what I will be talking to each of you about at our meetings:

  • Where are you at with your comic book project?
  • A question about your academic goals for, and your progress in the FIG.
  • A question you have for me (please think this one out so we can have a substantial conversation around any questions and/or concerns you have for the FIG).

If you have not set up a meeting time with me, please contact me ASAP to do so.

If you have any questions about any of this please let me know.

Best,

Robert
