MOCCA – The Original Study (R305A140185)
MOCCA researchers (Biancarosa, Carlson, Davison, & Seipel) took the original 40-item paper version of MOCCA (developed by Drs. Seipel and Carlson) and developed a larger pool of items that would provide three forms for each grade in Grades 3-5. MOCCA was also converted to an online, browser-based administration system. The main features of the assessment and outcomes of the validation study are as follows:
- MOCCA is a meaningful diagnostic assessment of reading comprehension that helps teachers understand not only whether students struggle with comprehension, but also the underlying reasons for their struggles (Biancarosa et al., 2019; Liu et al., 2019).
- MOCCA has been fully validated as a diagnostic assessment of reading comprehension with excellent reliability (Biancarosa et al., 2019; Davison et al., 2018; Su & Davison, 2019).
- MOCCA also has preliminary evidence of its validity as a screener for reading comprehension difficulties (Biancarosa et al., 2019).

MOCCA – The College Study (R305A180417)
MOCCA researchers (Seipel, Carlson, Clinton-Lisell) refined and validated MOCCA for use in post-secondary settings. The study resulted in a fully developed and validated assessment of postsecondary students’ reading comprehension for narrative and expository texts. MOCCA – The CAT Study (R305A190393)
MOCCA researchers (Biancarosa, Davison, Kennedy, Weiss) validated a compter-adaptive (CAT) version of MOCCA suitable for use in Grades 3-6. The CAT version of MOCCA significantly reduces testing times for students and improved the precision with which students’ abilities are estimated. MOCCA CAT now takes an average of 15 minutes to administer and is available for free use in Grades 2-6.
MOCCA – The SBIR
In a collaboration with Emberex, an educational and research software development company, MOCCA researchers revised the MOCCA platform to make it more feasible for implementation, intuitive and easy-to-use, and useful for teachers and leaders serving Grade 3-6 and college students.
