This Could Be Your Last Ride from Matt Ferguson on Vimeo.

Everything in this piece let’s you know that you will not be feeling good by the end of it. The video fades in from black and to a lighting that is just visible. The lighting in the room forces the viewer to focus on the objects that are lit such as the Patrick, the subject at 0:07 mark, or the motorcycle at 0:29.

The filmmaker used GoPro footage from a motorcycle ride at 1:03. The shot just before it suggests that what he is doing on the computer is in accordance with the footage we are watching. The filmmaker is constantly moving the camera as well. Movements that are not directly left-to-right or vice-versa, such as the one at 3:36, suggest that the movements are handheld, but since the shots are all played back at a slower speed, the footage does not look shaky. As oppose to obvious slider shots such as the one at 2:49.

Though the piece inspires me to take a slide out to my next shoot, it also put into frame what I am continually changing when it comes to journalism. Who do I want to work for? What do I want to create and for who? This piece is made on the ground floor. The subject and the filmmaker are friends so it makes it easier to find this story, but ideally I want to create my work from the ground level; in the trenches of people’s stories. In their homes, at work or while they are spending time doing what they love. This video works as a PSA of sorts, but the message is coming from someone who is in the same pool as the audience.
