I remember watching a music documentary about an R&B producer, and at one point she said the main thing she needed to do when helping her untrained client make a video was to make sure he or she didn’t dance. The music can be great, but an image of a musician dancing badly can ruin the viewer’s positive connection to the song.

The band OK Go has taken the opposite tack toward success, becoming much more famous for its intricately choreographed videos than for its bland (in my opinion, no offense intended!) music.

Check out iwontletyoudown.com for the interactive version of the Busby Berkeley-themed video, which was allegedly shot in one long take with a slowed down audio track and a crazy octo-copter.

“I Won’t Let You Down” begins as many music videos do, with band members in a sterile studio performing choreographed moves.  But as with many good (music) videos, the director takes the viewer from one world into another, and at :48 we retreat from the structured artifice of the studio and roll out to the structured artifice of the outside set.

The video is built through camera motion and indeed when the octo-copter leaves the earth of the first aerial shot at 1:10, we realize this is a very different video experience for the viewer. The height achieved by the octo-copter is just not realistic for a crane shot, and the resulting disorientation is exhilarating. And upon repeated viewings, it’s fun to notice new details, such as the altimeter-like white markings on the ground, presumably to help the umbrella-toting band and dancers keep their places at pace.

The high-angle shot returns to the ground at 1:50, and there’s a clue to determine the speed of the shot when two dancers cartwheel shortly thereafter. I guess the video to be shot at roughly half-speed because the cartwheels look roughly twice as fast as normal, and it’s rather hard (I imagine) to cartwheel at a vastly unnatural speed.

At 3:10 the camera begins a 360-degree pan, or, rather, a 720-degree pan, before the big reveal at 3:50 to the end of the video.
