The Scratched Earth: How Artifacts Communicate Meaning

The Earth on Celluloid, Complete with Scratches

As I take time out from struggling with my sequence cut, I turn to something light: a Vice piece about a party robot that got some business in Los Angeles in the 1980s and 1990s. It’s called “California Soul,” summing up its unanswered question in two words that may or may not belong together.

The director takes a swing at the top of the “ladder of abstraction” with a montage from 0:40-1:10, punctuated by narration that declares, at 1:00, “Where are the relics of the future that we thought we were heading towards?” I don’t know if this particular frame on the party robot story is all that persuasive, and I don’t know that the director cares. It plays almost like a parody of the concept. The real question is “soul?”

More than anything, it’s an excuse to use archival footage to create visual texture. This piece looks fabulous, as much because of the dated grains, flyers, photos and fonts as because of its aged subjects. In the screen shot above, note the white smears just to the upper left of Earth. This is stock celluloid, and the black ink of space perfectly shows off the flaws and scratches of film. The second you see celluloid flaws, you know the piece will be historical. You also know that it will be more about texture than storytelling. The very visible flaws in the media serve as a powerful visual cue.

The filmmaker returns to this motif of decayed visuals again at 2:36-2:52:

It’s a toy robot commercial, and the filmmaker shows it to us with VHS wear intact. The commercial even starts with a blue screen announcing playback of a tape recorded in SP mode. (I wonder if the playback wasn’t altered to look even worse – a few of the glitches look more digital than analog.)

To punch up our awareness of old stock throughout, the filmmaker pointedly films most his present-day footage outside, at midday, exposed for maximum crispness. The contrast in grains throughout this piece is what makes it work.
