Bringing life to a sit down interview

Generally if we have a sit down interview with a subject we cover most of it with b roll. The idea being that it’s not visually interesting to watch someone sit in a chair and answer questions. I like that Vox upends that rule by staying on the president and adding helpful graphics to make the piece visually interesting.

At :23, as President Obama starts to talk about the balkanization of media leading to more polarization, we have a close up of the president with plenty of nose room for the graphic showing who does and does not trust Fox News.

We get the second use of graphics created to accentuate the president’s hand movements at :38. Four small squares stretch and come back towards each other to visually represent that the president is talking about how technology brings the world together but also narrows our point of view. After watching thirty seconds of a sit-down interview, I would be ready to cut to a shot of someone else, but this piece holds my interest.

Graphics defining gerrymandering, and the Citizens United case float by, temporarily putting the president out of focus at :43.

It reminds me of the piece we saw last term where the little kid is describing a story about the mouse and we see it acted out as he’s telling the story. Vox is slickly annotating what the president is saying in real time which makes the video more compelling.

I especially like the push in on the graphic at 1:00. The president is almost completely out of frame as we focus on the timeline graphic as it populates, shows congressional makeup by party and then disappears.

At 1:22 I thought it was a bold choice to have President Obama on camera but out of to show a Bloomberg article about the 111th congress on his right. At 1:36 we smoothly pan right from a closeup shot of the president to a graphic showing how the use of the filibuster has skyrocketed over the last two years.

The interview is shot with a black background which makes the graphics pop. The majority of the shots are wide and close up which gives the filmmaker enough space to add graphics.
