Arnold World: Paper Sculptor

Last term I produced a story about Arnold World, a paper sculptor who spends his time at Powell’s Bookstore creating paper flowers. Thanks to a fellow colleague, it was published on opb.org. For this week’s inspirational blog post, I wanted to substitute it for making that piece of work better.

First, I posted it to my personal website stephanieessin.com. I made sure the URL included “Arnold World” and “Paper Flowers” in order to better the SEO title. I also included tags that were relevant to the piece.

Vimeo is the host to my video, so I looked into what else I could do to improve my original project. Turns out, they have a free way for you to publish captions on your piece. The process is a little finicky, but once I got it, I was able to post captions on my piece. In order to turn the captions on, hover over the scrubber bar and click on the box with the CC. 

I’m going to publish captions and subtitles on all of my pieces. It really makes your work more accessible and searchable when you include proper SEO titles, tags, and captions.

Lastly, I added some descriptive text to my pieces on both my website and on Vimeo. When writing the text, I tried to include a hook that would grab a viewer’s attention.

When you first see Arnold World’s flower sculptures, you wouldn’t think they are made of napkins. The intricately coiled stems and symmetrical petals appear to be folded together with wire and glue. But Mr. World will tell you it is much more simple. “We don’t fold, we roll,” he says.

He creates his artwork not in an art studio, but at a coffee table in Powell’s City of Books. He is there everyday rolling, creating and growing the energy he hopes to leave behind.

 

I wanted to drive home the point that even though his flowers are made out of napkins, they are intricate and beautiful. Perhaps something we would find in an art studio or gallery. But we find out that even though the flowers themselves are intricate, there is simplicity in Arnold’s artwork, both in the materials he uses and where he creates it.
