Providing a sense of scale

This look at Green Bank West Virginia, a town without wireless, is a study in scale. The filmmaker shows how the massive, high-tech radio telescope in the area towers over what is otherwise a small, rural town.

I enjoyed the drive by shot at :26. This is where we get the reveal of just how large the radio telescope is. The camera then goes to a series of quick shots of the football team, the river and deer followed by the scientist and his bank of computers to contrast the rural and high tech sides of the town.

I also thought that the series of wide shots from 1:29 to 1:37 were well done. They show the audience how massive the telescope is by following Felix J. Lockman so that we have a human scale to compare it to. Then it pans to show more of the telescope.

We then go back to the ride along with the technician patrolling for interference, where we get a succession of detail shots looking at his tools of the trade starting at 2:11.

Then the video shifts focus to the residents, and how close the community is because they can’t use wireless technology. At 3:15 we get a two-shot of the Rasmden’s saying that neighbors recognize each other in a town like Green Bank.

At 3:30 we have three matched concept shots that bring us in to the local gas station. First we establish that it’s a Marathon station. At 3:33 we are looking through the front door of the station. Then at 3:35 we are inside the station with the local customers while we hear Heather Niday of the local radio station say, “people in large cities sometimes forget that you’ve got to make a human connection.”

My favorite shot of the piece is at 4:55 when the camera shifts from focusing on weeds in the field with the telescope in the background, to putting the telescope in the distance into sharp focus.

    One thing I noticed about this video that I didn’t like was the lower thirds. Sometimes they just disappeared suddenly without any fade, and other times they remained visible until the next scene. It was a little odd to me that the editor didn’t chose a consistent way of building in and out of those lower thirds. I’m not a fan necessarily of fading in and out, but to see it there one second and have it disappear a moment later, while we were still on the same shot, was a little distracting to me.
