Clever Visuals + Sound Design = A Catchy Short

This short, one minute video entitled “Move” was a finalist in Vimeo’s 2012 video awards. It’s actually an advertisement for a travel agency, but I think there are a lot of interesting techniques used in the video that we should try in our own assignments.

For example, it’s short and to the point. That makes it easily shareable (and as a journalist, who doesn’t want their work to be widely shared?)

It also brilliantly utilizes something as technical as frame composition to illustrate a strong point. All the shots in the first 15 seconds have our main character positioned in the exact center of the frame. However each second brings a jump cut which clearly indicates that our character is traveling. The backgrounds and scenery fly by so quickly, there’s just the hint of an impression of Paris, Mexico, and other locales.

As we all know, jump cuts can be jarring. We hope to avoid them, but at the same time they can also be employed, as is the case in Move, to illustrate specific points. Here we see someone traveling all over the world, but with the consistency of the composition, the jumps don’t feel very jarring. Instead it feels like he’s on a path of sorts. And since the imagery is very stimulating, those first 15 seconds are packed with energy.

This leads me to another successfully utilized technique in the video. Sound design.

What could easily be a wall-to-wall series of evenly paced jump cuts is occasionally broken by brief gasps of sound. At :29 seconds, following a short pause in the music, our character claps his hands and a large gathering of pigeons leap into flight. Visually it’s stunning, but it’s effect is amplified given the emphasis provided by a break in the music and, in addition, our first taste of nat sound, the clap. It’s even a bit humorous.

Just seven seconds later, another element of sound design comes into play. Our character is seen in a wheat field, arms reaching outwards, accompanied by a rushing sound that might be wind, or perhaps just the sound of chaffs of wheat softly brushing against each other. Either way, it’s beautiful and again placed during a brief beat of silence in the music.

As the end nears and the music swells, we are treated to a few more seconds of sound, including bleating goats and raucous cheers from a stadium.

The compounding effect of all of this sound design is that we feel thrilled as viewers by the limitless possibility of experiences that can be achieved through world travel. Or at least, that’s how I felt. But the sound design, I think, is well crafted because it helps carry the energy of the piece to the close. The novelty of the jump cuts might have worn off 30 seconds in were it not for the clever use of sound design.

This video is great inspiration for anyone looking to quickly add impact to their videos. Thoughtful sound design and purposeful jumps cuts are both techniques that when employed correctly, really distinguish the professional from the amateur.
