Not Heavy Handed… But I Get the Point

In class we discussed different techniques used by filmmakers to capture documentary footage. Perhaps the documentarian inserts their own voice into the film, or maybe, going a step further, they create a type of rouse in order to elicit a response. This reactionary style seems to be falling out of favor, as audiences yearn to draw their own conclusions.

In this Op Doc entitled “China’s Web Junkies”, I believe the filmmakers have done an excellent job of keeping their own voices out of the film while still crafting a very strong and palpable thesis statement for their work. They simply let the images and voices onscreen do the talking.

When the camera shoots through a barbed wire fence, and we see a forlorn internet junkie staring out the window, it’s the cinematography that injects the opinion of the filmmaker into the piece, not the use of narration. The piece has a good mixture of matched action editing coupled with more artistic, statement-like shots. The slow pan across the internet cafe, for example, was used effectively to illustrate the sheer scope of the problem in China without literally needing to state “Internet cafes are a widespread problem in China.”

And yet, the real problem was alluded to, again not through narration, but through artistic cinematography. Is it loneliness, not addictive tendencies, that is the real culprit here? The audience is left with this thought by the conclusion of the piece, as we watch a mother crying over a letter from her son. Through parallel editing we see her reaction to his harsh words and his reaction to his abrupt internment. He states that he feels so lonely, and we see him alone in his cell as the mother reads the words from the letter.

I admire how the cinematography and careful, subtle editing elicited such a strong thesis statement without the use of heavy-handed narration. I think we can all watch this piece and use it as inspiration for editorial restraint.
