Camera Movement and Stillness in “Leviathan”

Directed by a couple of experienced guys but shot by the crewmembers of a commercial fishing boat, “Leviathan” is a bit of an endurance test, as it plays out in long takes with intense, grating audio, but it’s unforgettable afterward (Also, it’s maybe the wettest movie ever made.)

It fascinates me how seemingly mundane sights and sounds can be transformed by motivated camera movement. For example, one of the movie’s most famous images is at 0:17 in the trailer, where a camera attached to side of the fishing boat is plunged underwater, then breaks into air, over and over again. This is a unique way of moving a camera, but it’s not just a gyroscopic gimbal or technocrane, It presents a stark image of repetition, monotony, and cycling feelings in the viewer of suffocation and freedom.

At 1:35 in the trailer, the camera doesn’t move, and we see a worker half asleep, swaying back and forth, as a machine noise screeches ominously on the soundtrack. The lack of camera movement as well as motion in the frame makes the subject looked trapped, especially when contrasted with nondiagetic audio that is clearly from something big that IS moving.

    Thanks for sharing. I have to agree. Sound seriously takes things to a different level. Audio is so important to accompany video. It is such raw and real footage and I think the sounds they choose to use solidifies this. It takes the viewer right into the room. It is a fine example of breaking the rules but breaking them with purpose and poise.
