War documentary from 100 years ago

This documentary was made at the time of the battle of the Somme, in 1916, an infamous battle in which . The filmmakers shot the lead-up to the battle and parts of the battle itself. The BBC has a piece on it today
There are a number of interesting things about this film. It was shot at the time, and the film now resides at the Imperial War Museum, and is an “official” account. Also, apparently some of the scenes were re-enacted or staged, but those scenes were not marked as “fake.” They were included as though they were real; mind you, the filmmakers were there and were not speculating about what happened and what it looked like. Still, they made no distinction between real and not real. The article says 20 million people saw the film in Britain which was roughly half of the population of 46 million at the time.
Another thing that is interesting is the sound. Silent films were never really presented as silent back in the day, and often there would be a lecturer who spoke as the audience watched the film, telling them what they were seeing and making comments about the action. Sometimes there were people behind the screens making sound effects. The experience that contemporary audiences had is therefore ephemeral. Which makes me wonder if people went back to see it more than once to perhaps experience a different lecturer, hear different music or sound effects.
I always think it is interesting to think about how the conventions of media consumption, not just production, came to be.
