***Warning*** The film I have chosen to feature contains graphic and explicit material. It is about prostitution in Thailand, India and Mexico. It is NSFW and can be disturbing to some. My intention is not to offend or make anyone feel uncomfortable. Though we represent an educational institution, I feel that is no excuse to not talk about controversial films and topics, but, instead, an outlet for critical thinking to occur for said topics. Though none of the clips I intend to show have any actual sex scenes or nudity in it, this documentary does contain one towards the end. Please watch at your discretion.
The documentary is one of most graphic films I have ever seen around the topic of prostitution. Even more so because it is in modern times and showcases one of the most controversial practices to ever exist and that continues to exist. Not all films are designed to be aesthetically pleasing or emotionally moving. Nor should all be edited for mass audiences threshold for graphic material.HBO has produced short documentaries such as “Hookers at the Point” and “Hookers and Johns” that, I feel, were one of the most graphic images ever televised on American programming. They also had a series called “Cathouse” that showcased “legal” prostitution, but was filmed more as a reality TV series.
Hearts and Minds, a film I will talk about at a later time, showed raw images and footage of raw, human experiences. Whore’s Glory epitomizes the same journalistic concept as Hearts and Minds, but around a different theme. Though the films can be described as disturbing, it is also informative to a human experience, thus it is journalism.
From a technical standpoint, the beginning to the film tells a mini-story without words. It shows women putting on makeup and then off to the showcase/dance area. The laser pointers are what drives the action. The first shot of the lasers are at around the 0:47 mark, though it is unclear what is really in the woman’s hand. Three seconds later, we see the laser in action as it is on a pedestrian’s face, then it is followed by a matched-action camera shot that shows where the laser is coming from and what it’s purpose is. The process happens repeatedly until the laser serves its purpose and “customers” come inside the venue.
