I saw this section of this Vice story and thought this photographer’s technique was noteworthy of this class. Start at 4:22 when the photographer, Ziyah Gafic talk about an upcoming project he is working on. His goal, as he states, is to create something as a photographer that leaves a small interference on  the people effected, and also is a tool to help victims. He focuses specifically on compiling a book of photographs of items that belonged to people who have gone missing in Bosnia. Roughly 40,000 people have been reported as missing or killed. family members of missing. As personal belongings were recovered by forensic workers, along with the human remains, family members must sort through these items to try and identify their kin.

“This is a horrible process. And I said, wait a minute, wouldn’t it be better if these
people actually recognized these items on the paper instead of actually physically having to go to these facilities and browse?”
So he did just that. He compiled a book of photographs of these items so families would’t have to physically go through them. His technique turned out to be really effective, and almost alarming.

As he explains, he took the items and arranged them on a forensic table, just how the body remains are displayed. He photographed them with the intention of them looking as if they are in a clinical, and highly sterile environment.
“It’s amazing how absolute detachment in form can actually create an extremely emotional body of work. Everyone has a wristwatch, everyone has family pictures in their wallet. It allows you as a reader to create a story around [it],” he says.
His project was picked up by numerous publications including Twenty who distributed it to Spain, Holland, to the States. To him, it is the most important work he has ever done.
Our take away: What is the most effective way to convey emotion in our multimedia pieces? We see here that sometimes it is most effective away from the original environment. You take away a backdrop and suddenly the object is seen through more receiving eyes. As he suggests, detachment can be, ironically, emotionally charging.
