A couple of weeks ago we discussed the often-repeated idea that “music is emotional fascism,” that it tells us how to feel in a nonfiction piece rather than letting us decide. That’s true, for worse and better.

While this piece is a parody rather than a classic documentary, it is an outstanding example of the power I think music can have in in nonfiction film …. music is such a powerful tool to create meaning by way of sound/picture juxtaposition. Fr example,e the juxtaposition of stock footage of North Korean marches and large-scape performances with a martial American pop song compelling us to think about the similarities between the pop cultures of the U.S. and North Korea.

And think about how the music framed points of view and created empathy in the first moments of “Harlan County USA.”

The surge of music at 0:36, addressing the stark material we’ve just seen and heard, immediately alerts us that there is a creative, artistic and emotional voice in the film that will be addressing the topic of coal mining. The awesome reveal at 1:10 further jolts us with the information that the song is actually diagetic and that this movie will literally be about talented, soulful people who happen to live in mining towns.
