Mercy Corps’ video team mostly builds work directly focused on one country, or on one beneficiary, the better to show how the organization specifically helps that country. But occasionally they need a video that takes a more big-picture view of the work Mercy Corps does around the world. I’ve taken to calling these “omnibus videos.”

It Starts With You

The most recent video uses a mix of motivated and unmotivated video with still photography. The video is vignetted and nearly all hand-held, while the Ken Burns Effect is heavily used on the stills. Text and graphics move around in the frame. Jump cuts are used throughout, with no cross-fades. Rather than hearing an interview with a beneficiary, we have a classically inspirational slow-build soundtrack, with twinkly piano leading to swelling strings and barreling drums worthy of Explosions in the Sky.
