In The Moment

A Day in the Life at the House of Records

By Kyle Swartz

Matt McCallum is an employee of the House of Records and has been working for the store since February of 2016. As a clerk, about half of his time is spent inspecting, cleaning, and cataloging CDs and records, while the other half consists of manning the counter and providing customer service.

McCallum prepares some CDs for sale. All of the used CDs, vinyl records and cassettes they receive are carefully inspected and cleaned before being put out on the shelves.
McCallum wipes down a dirty CD jewel case. According to McCallum, their secret to cleaning the jewel cases is baby oil.
McCallum checks the computer between cleaning CDs. He has worked at House of Records since February 2016. When asked about his attitude towards the job, he simply responded, “I love it here.”
McCallum helps a customer find a record he’s been looking for. The customer, Michael Falter, is from the coastal town of Florence, Oregon and drove for over an hour to be able to visit the store.
Before ringing up a customer, McCallum logs the artist, album title and catalog number of each record. This allows the employees to know which records they need to restock or reorder.
