Congratulations on being so near the term’s end!

Please note that Student Experience Survey (SES) is open Monday, May 31 to Monday, June 7 at 7am. As you know, this is UO’s own, new and developing tool to gather student feedback on courses.

These practices have helped instructors boost response rates and get the rich, targeted feedback the SES can prompt:

  • Carve out 10 minutes of class for students to take the survey or offer a small amount of extra credit to the class if you cross a response threshold (say, 75%).
  • Tell students their feedback matters to you—that you read it and use it as you continue to develop the course.

Read the Senate Continuous Improvement and Evaluation of Teaching Committee’s “Student Experience Survey Response Rate Report.”

Grading and Communicating via Canvas: As you communicate with students about their final work and enter course grades into the Canvas Gradebook, please keep in mind that you can “hide” in-process assignment/exam grades so students aren’t confused by seeing scores change as you work. (For more information about how to hide and unhide grades see this Canvas Grade-Posting Policy how-to page.)

You can direct message students from the Gradebook by clicking their name, which pops up a context card with an email link. The Gradebook also has a “Message Students Who” feature that allows you to send messages to students who meet criteria with respect to an assignment (say, students who haven’t submitted yet or score higher or lower than a set amount). Use caution sending emails to individual students from the main Canvas inbox: it’s possible to accidentally send private messages to all students in a class. Using the direct Gradebook email feature is a safer alternative.

Pandemic Teaching Experiences: Survey, Listening Sessions

Provost’s Teaching Fellows Anita Chari and Alison Gash, along with the Teaching Engagement Program, seek to capture challenges and points of pride from the past 14 months—and to look forward to fall teaching in a way that reflects and accounts for these experiences.

We invite you to fill in this simple four-question survey. We’ll compile and share back responses and develop programming ideas based on them.

Professors Chari and Gash will host faculty listening sessions as a chance to debrief together. We invite you to join us:

Open Education Resources Funding, Cohort

Open Oregon OER Grant Funding

Open Oregon Educational Resources seeks grant proposals that implement high-impact, culturally relevant, inclusive, collaborative projects in support of open education and reduced textbook costs in lower-division courses. The current call for OER grant proposals is open through July 9. Interested faculty should work directly with their Departmental Grants Administrator and UO Sponsored Projects Services on the application prior to submitting to Open Oregon. Contact Rayne Vieger (raynev@uoregon.edu) with questions or to discuss a proposal.

Equity and Open Education Faculty Cohort

Are you interested in making your course materials relevant and accessible for all of your students? Do you wish that your course materials incorporated and supported the voices and experiences of your actual students? Are you concerned about the cost of commercial course materials that don’t support equitable student learning? Register for the Oregon statewide 2-part Equity and Open Education Faculty Cohort by June 14. Participants will earn a $200 stipend upon completion of “Part 1-Explore” and will have the option to earn an additional $300 stipend in “Part 2-Implement.”
