Richie Incognito bullied Jonathan Martin not only in the locker room but through phone calls and text messages. The news first broke after Jonathan Martin left the team and checked in to a local hospital. He said that he was having emotional and psychological problems from the locker room mentality of the Dolphins. Next the records of the emails and text messages sent to Martin surfaced and Incognito was on headlines across the country. The bullying was a huge public relations disaster for the Miami Dolphins because the information was leaked to the news. The NFL prides itself on locker room morale. This wasn’t just a PR scandal for the Dolphins, it was a PR scandal for the entire NFL. As more was released about the topic, the public learned more about Richie Incognito and Martin. Multiple team members were also interviewed about the subject, many stating that they supported Incognito.
This public relations disaster had huge parameters, it didn’t only affect the football team but it affected the entire league. The time frame of this subject is from October 30th to present. Richie Incognito received a 6 game suspension which he has served. The issue is still definitely not over, Jonathan Martin and others involved still have much to figure out.
The overall focus of our project was to cover the locker room scandal from multiple viewpoints. We covered the Miami Dolphins response as an organization, Richie Incognito’s response, Jonathan Martin’s response to the bullying, Jonathan Martin’s response to how the media covered it, The NFL’s response to the entire situation, and Jonathan Martin’s response to the Dolphins as an organization.
