Center For Disease Control Zombie Awareness Campaign

Don’t Be A Zombie!

The zombie trend has been on a steep rise for the last couple of years, jumping from the horror scene into the mainstream with comic books and shows like “The Walking Dead.” The Center For Disease Control, a government institution responsible for public health in the United States, was even featured on the show at the end of their first season in 2010.

In May of 2011, the group of CDC employees responsible for the awareness of campaign were having trouble coming up with a new campaign. One of the employees remembered some tweets comparing the tsunamis in Japan to zombies, and thus, the campaign was born. From one initial blog post stemmed posters, an educator’s website, and a graphic novel, all aimed at spreading disaster awareness. With this campaign, they were able to reach and spread awareness to a whole new demographic.

The overall focus of our project is how, using public relations, the CDC was able to engage a new demographic, increase problem recognition, lower constraint recognition, increase involvement in other audiences, and revive the outdated and undervalued disaster awareness campaign.
