Lesson 4

  • Target grade(s): 5th grade
Prior Knowledge:

  1. The ability to examine five elements of narratives
  2. The ability to apply the framework of narrative writing on outline writing a draft
  3. The ability to identify the connections between stories and the concept of modularity through evaluating their writing
  • Explanation of the rationale: we develop the instructional unit by analyzing the framework of Modularity, which is one of the computer science concepts, and the standards of narrative writing to 5th graders. We film our tutorials of how to use the Scratch, and we introduce a YouTube tutorial that students could use to explore more about the programming on Scratch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIpmkeqJhmQ&start_radio=1&list=RDVIpmkeqJhmQ). According to the K12 computer science framework, 5th graders have basic operational skills on the computers, and they will practice more by developing their own Scratch work.
  • Key project: Video Tutorial & Scratch practice: the student will practice the basic programming on Scratch based on the tutorial guide and be given feedback from the teacher and their peers.
  • Formative assessment: Teacher’s comments and peers’ feedback
