  • Target grade(s): 5th grade
Prior Knowledge:

  1. The positive and negative impacts of computing on people’s social interactions and culture, and they have the basic sense of online safety, ethics, and law when creating an account.
  2. People could use computer to transform data into new forms
  3. Computers follow precise sequences of instructions automating tasks.
  4. There is a purpose of developing program collaboratively, such as could express an idea
  5. Daily processes can usually be expressed as algorithms that computers can follow.
  6. Computers can store data that can be retrieved later.
  7. 5th graders do understand the binary system and simple algebra calculation.
  • Explanation of the rationale: we develop the instructional unit by analyzing the framework of Modularity, which is one of the computer science concept, and the standards of narrative writing to 5th graders. Here is the link we can use as a reference (https://www.davis.k12.ut.us/Page/51251).
  • Key project: Group story-construction project. Students will be in groups of 5 to complete group paintings that include five narrative writing elements at the end of this instructional unit.
  • Formative assessment: peer- reviewing, teachers’ feedback, and fulfilling the handouts
