Dr. Tasia M. Smith was an Evergreen Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services in the College of Education. Dr. Smith’s research focused on the prevention and reduction of chronic disease-related health disparities among underserved populations. Her specific research interests included exploring social determinants of health, the bi-directional influence of mental health and physical health conditions, and examining factors that influence engagement in health promoting behaviors such as physical activity and healthy eating. Dr. Smith also designed, implemented, and evaluated community-based health promotion programs. Dr. Smith viewed graduate and undergraduate students as vital research partners. She passed away unexpectedly, from natural causes, in 2018. A College of Education scholarship was created in her name to support underrepresented and/or first-generation students (https://blogs.uoregon.edu/aboutcoescholarships/overview-of-coe-scholarships/).
