Newsletter December 2024

Dear colleagues,

The faculty of the Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) Program would like to share their inaugural newsletter with the wider UO community (see attachment). In this quarterly publication, we highlight the program’s history, mission and values through SHL faculty narratives and highlight previous events and student success stories. As we near the program’s 15-year anniversary, this newsletter celebrates the transformative education experience that the SHL program and the Department of Romance Languages provides for Latinx UO students.

We wish you all a happy and restful holiday season.

Sergio Loza, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics

Director of the Spanish Heritage Language Program

Department of Romance Languages

Tarde de estudio

Last Monday, December 2nd, we had a tarde de estudio at the Friendly Lounge, an event organized by our Líderes Bilingües. We enjoyed Chocolate abuelita, pan dulce, and most importantly, dedicated ourselves to working on our finals. It was a cold day, but the community always makes everything warmer!

An Inspiring Meeting with Our Líderes Bilingües!

Oct. 2024. Our SHL program gathered for an inspiring meeting with our líderes bilingües, centered around our symbol of heritage. Together, we discussed strategies to strengthen learning and support our heritage students. A big thank you to our líderes bilingües for their dedication and incredible work!

Desafío y Diversión at EMU

On October 25th, our Líderes Bilingües, Loany Carreón Jiménez and Yesenia Rivas Ruiz, together with Miguel Antonio Guevara, Assistant Coordinator of the SHL Program, and instructors Amy Costales and Alex Zunterstein, hosted the trivia event “Challenge and Fun.” This special program event provided a space for sharing with the Latinx community at the University of Oregon, dedicated not only to fun but also to learning about general culture related to our Hispanic heritage—a space for learning and community-building.

SHL Director Sergio Loza Presents on Latinx Ambassador Program at HLS

Prof. Sergio Loza Director of the Spanish Heritage Language Program was one of four plenary speakers at the Hispanic Linguistics Symposium, an annual conference with a focus on theoretical and applied linguistics in Spanish and Portuguese. In his presentation, “Moving CLA beyond the classroom: Development and Outcomes of a Latinx Ambassador Program,” Sergio gave an overview of the field of critical language awareness and highlighted how our RL program is taking CLA to the world outside the SHL classroom.

Congrats, Sergio, for this highly visible presentation that advances your work in SHL program direction!
