Hayden Kaiser Final review

I was relatively happy with what I had come up with for the review, in terms of concept and visual imagery. However, moving towards submitting for the competition, I definitely have a lot of work to do. I felt like my concept did a good job of addressing the global issues of pollution and urban sprawl. My reviewers thought the concept was strong but needed to be taken further in that more meaningful connections needed to be created. They brought up the word “energy” a lot and said that I needed to bring the emotional appeal to my project in order to make them really want to go there. They encouraged me to think of my boards as a movie trailer; something that piques interest for the building and gets people really excited about it.

Moving forward I think I have some good ideas to incorporate.

  • An idea the reviewers brought up is that in a traditional city, the street is what gives energy to all these public spaces. So, it would be great if I could connect the “nodes of energy” of each district in unique and meaningful ways.
  • I want to have a more literal translation of the traditional city plan and “de-compartmentalize” my districts. I think something about re-creating the urban fabric just in a vertical setting has appeal.
  • Bringing more emotional appeal to project!

Also, the reviewers encouraged me to push the limits of reality, saying that I should be thinking more futuristically. I agree. This is something that I have struggled a little bit with though, as trying to figure out how the building would actually work interferes with this thinking a bit. I think that my design has been grounded too much in reality because that is what I am comfortable with. However, realizing that I don’t have to figure out all the little details and that painting an amazing vision is the important part, that helps me loosen up a little bit.
