Drs. Stephanie De Anda and Lauren Cycyk traveled to Sydney, Australia this summer to present the EDLD Lab’s research on code-switching at the International Symposium on Bilingualism. We shared data from student research studies by Za’Nya Lyons and Alyssa Rodriguez that have examined code-switching among preschoolers exposed to Spanish at home and their parents during play. These studies found that children code-switching with similar frequencies and in similar ways as their parents, a good reminder that code-switching in bilingual homes is natural and systematic and not an indicator of communication disorders. This presentation was also a collaboration with colleagues Sara Surrain at the University of Texas and Maria Kapantzoglou at Portland State University.
